Whilst searching through my stash for something suitable for making Christmas presents, I found some fabrics that I had bought last year and had forgotten all about!!! Firstly some "Figgy Pudding" by BasicGrey for Moda yardage from Buttonberry... ...more fabric from Buttonberry and more "Figgy Pudding" - 4 Charm packs (enough to make a decent size quilt) and lastly, even more Charm packs - this time it's "Merry and Bright" by Sandy Gervais for Moda, from The Bramblepatch.

When I left for work this morning, at 6am, this was the view from my kitchen, even the dog wouldn't go outside as it was far too cold for her, and now it's nearly all gone... ...in keeping with the snowy theme, this is "A Redwork Christmas" - I made this last year, and it still needs to be quilted. The pattern is by Rosalie Quinlan, and I used a Jelly Roll for the borders (used the idea from my Truely Scrumptious quilt). This table runner was made very easily with a charm pack, and decorated with a Leanne Beasley stitchery pattern... ...more little stitcheries from Leanne Beasley patterns - last year I made lots of cushions for Christmas presents and added some stitchery as a finishing touch - these 2 blocks are leftovers, and will be put to good use for some presents this year..... (this gorgeous fabric with the snowflakes on was one of my favourites from a couple of years ago and found it's way into numerous Christmas gifts). And this kit is STILL waiting to be made up into a hanging Santa - another Rosalie Quinlan pattern, that I bought from The Fat Quarters as part of a monthly club last year..... oh well, if we get more snow on Wednesday, (my day off!!), I suppose I could always spend the day sewing :)
This is the view from my kitchen this morning - brrrr it's a bit chilly!! Thank goodness I haven't got to take the dog for a walk in the woods - she's gone on a shoot with Mr F today. Anyway, I thought you might like to see some of my "frosty" quilts..... .....I made this quilt a few years ago - it was a kit from Quilters Haven, and the pattern "Geese in a Snowstorm" is in Karin Hellaby's book "Fast Flying Geese" - the geese are curved, and the quilt is embellished with snowflake buttons. The binding fabric looks really frosty. I really liked this fabric - it worked very well with the theme of this quilt..... .....and this wall hanging was another QH kit - and is also featured in the same book. Some of the flying geese are cuved, and are embellished with beading. I was a real beginner when I made both of these, and it's good to look back and see how my quilting has improved over the years :) and remember how these were made with my very old Frister and Rossman sewing machine just before it died!!
When I have been to classes at Quilters Haven, lots of my quilting friends have admired my holdall that I keep all my "travelling" quilting stuff in, so I thought I'd share a picture of it will my blog readers. I's a Norwegian pattern by AnnAKa and was quite tricky to pit together, but it was soooo worth it - no-one else on my classes has got one like this!! My friend Hanne stayed with me in May, and she brought me the kit to make this holdall "Ut på kurs" - it's big enough to keep my large cutting board in (my large board is 18" x 24") and all my rulers - it's made with canvas and linen, and some of my batik scraps for the strips and the applique..... ..... the folder clips onto the front of the bag with dog-clips and D-rings and is easily removed..... .....it opens up and has lots of pockets made with plastic, to keep all your quilting equipment in, such as your rotary cutter, pencils, markers, small rulers etc - and stands up so you can have it on the table beside you while you work which is really useful.
Yet more Schnibbles - the first one is "Short Story" and I'll be teaching this pattern at my local quilt shop, Quilters Haven, next term. I used 2x Charm Packs, "Spring Magic" by April Cornell for Moda. This has now been quilted very simply, just stitch-in-the-ditch and the binding is on, but I took this over to QH today and realised that I had forgotten to take another picture of it :( sorry!! and the other one is called "Spin City" and is made from 2x Charm Packs..... the fabric is "Blush" by Basic Grey for Moda. Now please excuse me - but I have to search my stash for some more charm packs hehe!!
Not an actual fruit cake to eat - but I've finished the quilt top for the Schnibbles class that I taught over at Quilters Haven last week. This pattern is called "Plan C" and is from the book Schnibbles Times Two by Carrie Nelson and was made with 2x Layer Cakes from the "Fruitcake" collection by Basic Grey for Moda. I'm getting quite a collection of "Basic Grey" fabrics. (I've also got the Origins Jelly Roll, which is going to look fab once that's sliced up). It was sunny this morning when I took this photo, but really blustery so the quilt wouldn't hang still... ..and once I've got this quilted, it will hang over the back of my sofa for the festive season. This was a very quick quilt to piece together - the "Schnibbles Times Two" book by Carrie Nelson is probably the one I'm using most of all at the moment. Now I'm going to raid my stash of charm squares to make some of the smaller ones. Meanwhile, as all this sewing malarky has been going on, Mr F has been busy assembling a new fireplace - it makes the lounge look so much cosier than having a radiator as a focal point!!
I adore stitchery patterns by the Australian designer Leannne Beasley and was so excited when I read on her blog that she was launching her own magazine, and so quickly set up a subscription with Quilt Fabric Delights and just look what arrived in the post last week!! I'm going to make this pin board for my kitchen... ..and I thought I'd share some pictures of her other designs that I have made. This is my version of "Ruth's Quilt" from Leanne's book "Living the Dream". The fabric I used is "Simplicity" by 3 sisters for Moda, and I used a dark pink DMC thread for the stitchery. This cushion was made using left-over Jelly Roll strips - the stitchery centre was taken from a Leanne Beasley quilt pattern "Journey of a Quilter" and this just about sums up what I enjoy about getting together with my quilting friends... ...this was made in rather a hurry - the day BEFORE Mothering Sunday, Mr F asked me what I'd bought for his mother. Luckily I'd already started the stitchery centre, so quickly made it into another cushion. Anyway, my mother-in-law was thrilled to bits with it. And finally, this was the very first "Couch Companion" that I made, (a sewing case, with a padded centre for needles and pins, and lots of useful pockets), and was a present for my sister who makes the most fabulous quilts and gifts. (Mr F got so fed-up with me sticking my needles and pins into the arm of the sofa that I soon had to make one for myself!!) Now where did I leave that magazine?
Yesterday was spent over at my local quilt shop, Quilters Haven, teaching a Schnibbles class. The pattern is called Plan C and is from the book Schnibbles Times Two, by Carrie Nelson. My original sample was made with 2x Charm packs, (see previous post) but yesterday I used 2x Layer Cakes for demo purposes - these are from the "Fruit Cake" collection by Basic Grey for Moda. I've had these Layer Cakes for quite a while, and was saving them for just the right pattern - and luckily the background fabric, (which is an all-over in snowflake design and part of the same range) was in stock at Quilters Haven... .....this was the view that greeted me this morning. It really was VERY chilly and infact is was so chilly that the pond was completely frozen over, and the zebra grass and stipia gigantica in the background sparkled with the frost.
Høstvarianter is completed - the tendrils have finally been stitched - and is now adorning my dining room table!! As you can see, it was crisp and frosty this morning... ...even the dog didn't want to go outside for her early morning ramble - although it was bitterly cold, the garden looked very pretty. I couldn't resist photographing these cobwebs today - fortunately there were no inhabitants!!
I'll be teaching this pattern on Monday over at Quilters Haven - this is called "Plan C" and is another Schnibbles. It can be made with either 2x Charm packs (small size) or 2x Layer Cakes (large size). This one was made with 2x Charm packs - and the fabric is "Boutique" by Chez Moi, for Moda.
