Another baby quilt has been pieced and embroidered and quilted and bound - this one is for a very special friend who is soon to be a Grandma - well, the quilt is not for her, obviously, but for her soon to arrive grand-daughter. The fabric I chose for this is called "Puttin' On The Ritz" and is by Bunnyhill Designs for Moda. I bought a pack of 10" strips from my local quiltshop, Quilters Haven, and aded the strips of white paisley design from my stash. The original pattern suggests making these quilts with a pack of charm squares. The pattern is called Charm Squares Baby Quilt by Elizabeth Hartman, and is a free download from her blog Oh Fransson - this is one of my favourite baby quilt patterns. It is very quick and simple to piece together, and I just love the subtle pinks and greys in this fabric collection..... .....I have stitched the words with backstitch, using a pink Cosmo embroidery thread shade 803 and I used 3 strands of thread as the letters are quite large. I traced these words from a book called "Winsome Baby" by Nancy Halvorsen. I love adding some stitchery to these baby quilts..... .....and I've quilted it using straight rows of quilting, ½" apart. I used white Mettler quilting thread to quilt the rows on the white sashing, but used a King Tut variegated quilting thread in pink and beige, shade 944 for the rest of the quilt, and I also used the same thread in the bobbin too..... .....the binding fabric and the backing fabric is also from the same Bunnyhill Designs range of fabrics, "Puttin' On The Ritz". As a final little flourish, as usual I've added one of my labels to finish it off..... .....what do you think Sharon? Do you think your grand-daughter will like being wrapped up in this quilt?

Ohhhh another baby quilt - this one was commissioned by my friend Emily, as one of her friends is expecting a baby (she already knows the baby is going to be a little boy!) and so I decided to use this Dino Dudes fabric by Michael Miller that has been lurking in my stash for way too long, (I had originally bought it from a shop in Framlingham, "The Pretty Birdcage", which has since closed down), and I was waiting for the perfect project to use it - and this was it!! I just love the bright colours - orange and red and lime and turquoise and deep chocolate brown..... .....this has been embroidered using a chocolate brown DMC embroidery thread shade 801, and I used 3 strands of thread as the letters are quite large. I traced these words from a book called "Winsome Baby" by Nancy Halvorsen. I enjoy adding some stitchery to these baby quilts, as it makes it more personal..... .....to make the sashing, I bought this bright lime green solid from my local quilt shop, Quilters Haven, in Wickham Market. The pattern is called Charm Squares Baby Quilt by Elizabeth Hartman, and is a free download from her blog Oh Fransson - this is one of my favourite baby quilt patterns..... .....It is very quick and simple to piece together, and I've quilted it using straight rows of quilting, ½" apart. I used a King Tut variegated lime green shade number 924 for the quilt top, and Mettler quilting thread dark brown shade 712 for the quilt back..... .....The striped binding fabric is from the same range of fabrics - and the backing fabric is also from the same range - just look at all these little Dino Dudes! As a final little flourish, I've added one of my labels to finish it off..... .....it IS rather bright! What do you think Emily? Do you think your friend's baby will like being wrapped up in this quilt? YAY!!! It's finished - 35 of these gorgeous little stitchery blocks - and I absolutely love it! Now it's going to be delivered to Janette to work her magic with it and see what she can suggest with quilting designs and thread colours. This was made with leftovers of other projects, all the fabrics are a medley of collections by Fig Tree Quilts for Moda, and the pattern for this quilt is called "Ruth's Quilt", by Leanne Beasley, and is featured in her book "Living the Dream". I haven't decided yet whether to use a scrappy binding from my leftovers or whether to use just one fabric - what do you think? Oh but I do know that I am DEFINITELY going to make one of these quilts again - mmmm - maybe in chocolate and turquoise colours? Or maybe black and white? Now let me look in my scrap box and see what I can come up with!! Well my stitchery challenge is getting along just fine! Just one more week to go and this will be finished! I really love the colours of this quilt, and have enjoyed stitching these little blocks - 28 so far! I have used a deep coral coloured thread by DMC, shade 3328. Hopefully these blocks will be completed next week - so watch this space!! What a wonderful Sunday I've had - spending time with some great friends and a bit of sewing too - what could be better?! Firstly I've been to the Pond Gallery at Snape Maltings - it was the annual exhibition for the Textiles Art Group Suffolk and very inspiring it was too. Then we (some quilting friends and me) headed off to see Janet and Louise of Glenroy Designs - (they run an online quilt store) and I was nearly giddy when Janet showed us her fabric room!! Luckily I was able to do a little bit of retail shopping there, and bought a couple of these batiks - Tonga Treats by Timeless Treasures in Mango Salsa - I think a Schnibbles quilt is going to be my next project with these gorgeous batiks!..... .....then it was down to some serious stitching and chatting and drinking tea and eating cake and a bit more chatting - what better way to spend a Sunday afternoon?? This is just a sneak peek of another stitchery project - all will be revealed later in the month! Last night was July FNSI - and as usual I had the perfect project in mind! In the previous issue of the Norwegian quilting magazine "Quiltemagasinet", there was an AnnAKa pattern for a table runner using "Secret Garden" fabric, by Lynette Anderson for Lecien. If you remember, back in November 2011, Lynette very kindly sent me some of this beautiful fabric to play with! I had sent some of it to my friend Eva, and I have made several runners and LOTS of bags with this fabric and just have a little bit left - so I set too with planning and cutting and stitching away my Friday night. This Lecien fabric sews together so well - and these muted shades are a pleasent change from the brights that I normally opt for. The design is called "Sommerstitchery", unfortunately we've not had much of a summer yet, due to so much rain! Anyway, once the runner was sewn together..... .....then it was time to get busy with the stitchery. I taped both the pattern and the fabric onto the window using masking tape, and then I traced the design using a pigma pen. This floral design was stitched with a variegated thread, DMC shade 53. I didn't get time to finish the runner, but I'm really pleased with my progress so far. Maybe I'll get this finished at next month's FNSI!! Several of my sewing and quilting friends have been sharing this picture on Facebook - and I thought I'd share it too! "Happy Sewing Machine Day" - what a lovely idea! It has given me the chance to get out my beloved Bernina sewing machine and oil it and dust it and replace the needle and generally give it a jolly good clean ready for Friday Night Sew-In tomorrow night!! OK so I know I've been very busy sewing lots of projects, but I've not taken part in the Friday Night Sew-In for months now - well all that's about to change, because FNSI is happening on Friday 13th July and I have got a PILE of projects to get completed - sign up over here and check my blog on Saturday to see what I've managed to sew on Friday night :) I know it seems to be very early to be talking about the "C" word!! - but look what's happening over on the Quilt Fabric Delights website - you can sign up to receive some gorgeous Christmas projects - just imagine - a whole month of Christmas themed fun with the QFD Creative Team and guest designers Gail Pan, Janelle Wind, Natalie Lymer of Cinderberry Stitches and Janet Rowe of Wildcraft Farm. Guess what - I just did!! |
