Autumn Quilt Festival, Chilford

This morning Mr F and I drove off to the Autumn Quilt Festival at Chilford. I have been there a few times before, and I was really looking forward to seeing lots of gorgeous fabrics and threads, quilt displays, meeting friends, having a delicious lunch and maybe a little bit of shopping too.....

Picture
.....well, I wasn't disappointed - there were lots of fabrics to chose from, and some excellent quilts were on display.
After we'd had a good look round at all the stalls we had lunch, and then it was time to go back and have another look at the quilts - ....

Picture
.....it was impossible this year to pick a favourite but there were two that I really liked. Firstly this one by Dot Carver from Devon - titled "North of the Border" - the class was called "Back to my Roots" and the accompanying note stated that the heather colours of the "braes" and the strong shapes of the thistle provided the inspiration as her family roots are firmly in Scotland .....

Picture
.....and secondly this quilt by Freida Oxenham, Peeblesshire - the techniques she used are computer design (EQ5), hand and machine piecing, hand and machine quilting, hand embroidery and beading.....

Picture
.....there were probably lots of people there who I didn't get a chance to say "hello" to, but did manage to stop and chat to two of my quilting friends, Lesley and Mary (these ladies were responsible for me finding out about Janette the longarm quilter) and Mr F kindly took this snap of the 3 of us.....

Picture
.....there was even time to do a LITTLE bit of shopping hehe!!
I really like sewing toilettry and make-up bags, so I was looking for suitable fabric - and just look what I found! These beautiful Lecien fabrics were from Sew and So's -they will be perfect for making small bags.....

Picture
.....then I found another pretty green Lecien fabric on the Monkey Buttons stall, again for making toilettry bags. I also bought some cream and gold fabric for Christmas gifts, and some special fabric sheets for printing photographs onto.
it was nearly time to leave, when Mr F spotted some "country-style" fabric that he thought I could use to make him a quilted waistcoat to wear when he goes shooting - hmmm - well, any advice on how I go about that would be gratefully received!! - oh well I suppose he DOES deserve a pressie for taking me to the quilt festival ;)

Feeling just a little bit virtuous.....

If you're wondering what to do with yourself this weekend, the Spring Quilt Festival at Chilford Hall is well worth a day out - with lots of WONDERFUL stalls selling all manner of fabrics and patterns and books and notions - and lots of friends to meet up with to oooh and aaah at their purchases - but unfortunately this year I'm not going - actually, I still haven't used eveything I bought there LAST time, when I went with a huge shopping bag and a purse full of money to the Autumn Quilt Festival back in November. After my trip to Norway last month I really needed to save some money so...... I'm feeling just a LITTLE bit virtuous today as by staying at home I have saved myself a rather small fortune!!! So instead I'm going to be creative, do a little bit of sewing, and finalising a pattern for a little bag of my own design. I've been well and truely fortified, with several cups of tea (including  a herbal one that I didn't know whether to drink or to smoke!!) and a Norwegian breakfast. Oh, yes, that is the latest copy of Vignette magazine you can see lurking in the picture - (that arrived in the post on Friday) which has given me some more ideas for being creative :) Anyway, my friend Heather went to Chilford Hall yesterday (I really do need to see her sooooon to inspect all her purchases properly) and she's written all about her day out there on her blog .....

Whoooo hoooo - Linda Park has found me!! When I went to Chilford Hall Quilt Show in November, I only photographed one quilt - see above - it was absolutely stunning and was made by Linda Park. I posted a picture of it on my blog, and wrote the following.....

"There were some lovely quilts on show and this was my absolute favourite. It was made by Linda Park from Alford, Aberdeenshire - and I thought it was stunning. I have always wanted to make a "New York Beauty" quilt, and this has spurred me on to make one.....if anyone out there knows who Linda is, please get her to contact me so I can tell her how fabulous her quilt was!"

.....well, lo and behold - a few days ago I received an email from the very same Linda Park!!!

Anyway, this is what Linda had to say.....

"Hi Nicola - your blog was forwarded to me by my colleague and friend Jan. It was such a delight to read that you liked my Montana Cartwheel quilt so much - many thanks for your interest. This is a quilt i made at a class at my local quilt shop - Seattle Quilt Company, in Aberdeen. I'm almost finished another Montana Cartwheel quilt top in blacks, greys and red for my eldest son, Cameron who also liked the pattern. I'll send you a photo when it's complete! The pattern is one I have found very pleasing to sew - I do enjoy paper piecing. Quilters Haven looks lovely - I've just had a very quick tour through the shop and also had a rummage through your quilt gallery - so many quilts and beautifully stitched. I'll have to get myself in gear and get a blog going too when I find the time. Will visit your site again soon. Keep in touch! Regards, Linda."

I was absolutely totally over the moon to hear from you Linda - if you're reading this "Hi :)   and please say Hi to your friend Jan too, who really is the one who found me first hehe!!" - I still really can't believe you found me - and hope you don't mind me putting this picture of your stunning quilt on my blog AGAIN :)

Quilt Show and Shopping...

Yesterday was a great day out at Chilford Hall Quilt Show– lots of lovely stalls selling all sorts of quilty stuff – saw a great bag on the Monkey Buttons stall made with a couple of T-towels!!! And I just adore bags, so had to get the pattern, and bought some beautiful linen to make it with, then I bought a bundle of 6 fat-quarters of yummy “Eva” fabric from Kaleidoscope Fabrics.  I’ve already got a jelly roll of this fabric, so maybe that will go towards making a bigger project. Couldn’t resist this gorgeous red and white fabric from the Sunflower Fabrics stall...
Picture
...and I just couldn't resist buying this pack of batik fabrics from Patchwork Creations, to make a quilt to go on the back of my sofa in the lounge (all my quilt friends know how much I adore batiks, so this was never going to be left sitting on the stall!!), a kit to make a cute shoulder purse along with some “spring fasteners” to make purses for Christmas presents from Euro Japan Links, and a couple of Charm packs from the Buttonberry stall – these came with a free book, but think I’ll use these to make another “Schnibbles” quilt.....more of those on another post!! And finally this cute little micro iron, which is great for appliqué, when you don’t need a huge iron to press all those fiddly little pieces into place. No wonder I was exhausted by the end of the day!!!

Had a great day out today with my friends at Chilford Hall Quilt Show - there were absolutely loads and loads of wonderful stalls, and I saw lots of quilty things that I never realised I "needed" (photo's of my shopping to follow tomorrow!!) and some lovely quilts were on display. Lots of ladies at the quilt show commented on my shopping bag - thank you!! Here's a picture of my friends - Lesley, Joan, Carolyn and Jenny - these ladies are my "Quilting Groupies" and they religiously come to all my classes at Quilters Haven and are very supportive to me. This piccie was taken just after we'd had a super lunch (didn't take a piccie of that, as we had to queue for soooo long that by the time we sat down to eat it, we were so ravenous I completely forgot to get my camera out!!!). Those really lovely girls from Buttonberry , Emma and Lisa, were there too - their stall looked lovely as always!! - and I even got to meet Supermum aswell....
