In my previous blog post I wrote about the lovely kits that Hanne, from Lappedilla, puts together - and here is one that she sent me in the summer of 2009. This pattern is called "Sommerhjerter" (Summer Hearts), and is from Quiltmagasinet issue 3, 2009, and is designed by AnnAKa. As you can see, I haven't used this kit yet, but maybe over the weekend?.....I had already made a runner using another one of Hanne's kits in 2009, using fabrics similar to the one in the magazine, and it looked beautiful when it was finished.

Last week my friend Hanne sent me a great parcel from Norway - the latest issue of a Norwegian quilting magazine, Quiltemagasinet, and a kit to make some placemats - Vårlige tulipanhus (translated - Springtime Tulip House). Hanne is so good at picking out fabrics, and means I have no excuse in doing this project :) .....and yes, you guessed it, Vårlige tulipanhus was designed by AnnAKa. I quilted my new runner using a longer than usual stitch, (length about 3mm), using "stitch-in-the-ditch" and then half an inch either side of each block, using a YLI varigated quilting thread in black/ white/ grey on the top and a Mettler quilting thread in the bobbin, in white. Then I quilted around each centre square using the same white quilting thread for both top and bottom. I didn't want to buy more fabric for the backing, so I used a beautiful Makower white paisley tone-on-tone from my stash - totally impractical, but it looks very funky and modern..... .....this close-up shows the detail of the backing fabric I used. I prefer to hand sew my bindings to the back of my runners/ quilts - I use the same machine quilting thread, Mettler, using a slip stitch and a quilters knot to secure the ends, mitring the corners as I go..... .....Prairie Points are added - and the binding is finished. I used the last of my Armo fleece for the wadding..... .....and here it is, completed, taking pride of place on my dining room table. It looks fab!! All the fabric has been cut for my new tablerunner - and now it's time for lots of chain piecing to add the inner borders (a folded strip) to each centre square, then I can chain piece all the outer strips of the block. I have adapted the pattern (Kle kjokkenet i 60-tansdrakt5) to make this runner longer - there will be a total of 18 blocks altogether..... ..... all the blocks are sewn together, and I've made the binding with the stripey fabric (I really like stripey bindings and have used this idea on several quilts/ tablerunners). My top tip for joining stripey fabric for binding, is to join the strips of fabric end-to-end rather than using a diagonal seam. Now to find some suitable backing fabric from my stash so I can get this quilted and onto my table!! My friend Eva, from Otta, Norway, (Hei hei Eva) sent me a pattern for my birthday "Vårtegn" (Signs of Spring - Norwegian of course!!) and a pack of fabric to make a tablerunner – and here is how I’ve been getting on with it. I’ve just got to sew on some buttons and embroider the chicken’s legs and it’ll take pride of place on my dining table!! Again, this was a pattern that I was able to make by just using the diagrams rather than the written instructions... ...and finally a picture of the very long-suffering Mr F who was making the most of the glorious autum sunshine in the garden this afternoon and was planting up the winter hanging baskets, with primulas and pansies and ivy, and has planted some miniature daffodil bulbs as well so they'll pop up in the spring and give a great splash of colour. unfortunately my talents in the garden consist of me sitting there with a glass of Chardonnay, enjoying the view :) and pointing out if he's missed a weed or two hehe!!
My very good friend Hanne, from Norway (Hei hei Hanne) has a fabulous quilt shop called Lappedilla, and thanks to her I have a subscription to a Norwegian quilt magazine, "Quilemagasinet". Hopefully once I've got the hang of this blogging lark I'll be able to add a link to her shop - oh, by the way, Lappedilla is on facebook if you want to head over there - and she has a great website. This table runner was in the last issue of Quiltemagasinet, and is designed by AnnAKa - I'm really pleased with how it has turned out, even though it invoved rather alot of machine quilting!! Before any of you ask, no I don't read or speak Norwegian, but with the help of Hanne and Eva (Hei hei Eva) - I have managed to pick up a few words. This runner was made entirely with me just looking at the diagrams!!! Hanne has emailed me to say that another parcel is on it's way to me, and includes the latest issue of this magazine, and some of AnnAKa's latest patterns. Can't wait for that parcel to arrive - it'll keep me out of mischief - and if my friend Heather is reading this she'll be saying "that's a first"!!
