Another festive project - Candy Cane Angel table centre piece by Lynette Anderson Designs. This was bought as a kit from Cross Patch when I went to the Festival Of Quilts in the summer (hi Julia) and it includes the pattern with full-sized pattern sheet, fabrics from Lynette's Candycane Angel collection, and hand painted wooden star buttons. Once I had traced the templates onto appliqué paper, it was time to press the fabrics, and trace the stitchery design. Weaveline was fused to the back of the background fabric, and I used a selection of DMC embroidery threads for the stitchery. These cute wooden star buttons are used to embellish the top of the Christmas trees... ...the appliqued angels have candy-cane shaped wings, and they are flying around holding a bunch of hearts and stars. Their boots were a bit tricky, as they're quite small, but I loved the finished effect. I used a Clover Black Gold applique needle and YLI silk thread for stitching the applique into place... ...once the embroidery and all the surface applique was completed, it was time to make the table centre piece itself. I traced the template onto a piece of thin pellon, and fused it to the wrong side of the backing fabric. I stitched around the outside of the pellon, and clipped all the curves of the scollops. A small slit was made in the front, and the table centre was pulled through to the right side. A quick press with a warm iron, and the embellished centre was appliqued over the slit on the front... ...this was completed back in October, and it was packed away ready for Christmas. We decorated the tree at the weekend, and it was the perfect opportunity for a quick photoshoot of my table mats with some festive accessories! This looks really pretty, and will look super on my coffee table at Christmas time.

Just a sneak peek of my final project before I pack my machine away for a few weeks! I've been busy playing with some gorgeous Lecien prints, and added a splash of blue with this cute spotty fabric. This is going to be a Secret Santa gift for a work colleague. I wonder who is going to be lucky this year!! All will be revealed on December 22nd after our work "Christmas do".
"Stitch it for Spring" is a lovely book by Lynette Anderson Designs, and is full of really pretty patterns. Recently I bought some gorgeous fabric online from Lynette's shop the Little Quilt Store, which is from the Pocketful of Daisies collection. I'd decided to stitch the Garden Delights table centre, and loved these appliqued bee hives, and embroidered hollyhocks... ...I used a selection of DMC threads for the embroidery. Pretty birds sitting on the bird bath, surrounded by a garden of flowers - daisies and hollyhocks and daffodils. This cute picket fence was appliqued into place with blanket stitch and cream DMC embroidery thread, and was made with wool felt from the Eternal Maker. The "nails" on the fence are colonial knots. Another blue bird is perched on one of the fence posts... ...the centre embroidered panel is appliqued onto a scalloped background, and the layers are held together with quilting around both circles. The final touch is two hand painted wooden bee buttons, and these bees are busy buzzing around the beehive. This just needs to be wrapped, and will be ready to give to my m-i-l for Christmas. Hope she likes this as much as I do!!
A quilter can never have too many needle-cases! This one is called "Sewing Book", and the pattern is designed by Lynette Anderson Designs. This kit including the pattern, buttons, tape measure trimming and all fabrics, was bought online from Lynette's shop the Little Quilt Store in Australia. I really should have used a different coloured thread for the stitchery words "Sewing fills my heart with joy" but once I realised they show up very well, I really didn't want to unpick all those tiny stitches! The applique was made using my favourite method - applique paper, a glue stick and my apliquick rods, followed by a few dots of Roxanne's basting glue and a YLI neutral coloured silk thread... ...inside, the sewing book has some pockets for packets of needles that are also embroidered and a woollen needle holder too that has been secured into place with blanket stitch. A larger pocket is useful for embroidery threads and a needle threader. Fabric ties are stitched to the sides to hold it all together... ...a neat binding around the edge makes it look very smart, and I this will be put it to very good use! I just need to get a few packets of needles and some threads to fill up the pockets, and it will be wrapped up ready for a Christmas gift. I can't say who it's for, as that would spoil the surprise!!
These fabrics are from the Patch collection by Henley Studio for Makower UK, which I bought online from Secret Garden Quilting UK for a special project. A couple of years ago I made a baby quilt for Olive, and I needed to make another quilt as as she now has a baby brother, Harry. I made this one very simply, with 2 prints from the same fabric range, and a stripe for the binding. The fabrics were trimmed to approx 36" x 40" and quilted in a cross hatch design with a selection of YLI and Kingtut variegated quilting threads. I used a Clover Hera marker to mark the initial 3" grid, then quilted 0.5" either side of the grid, using the edge of the walking foot as a guide. I always use cotton wadding in baby quilts, and my favourite brand is Quilters Dream, select weight. Once it was quilted, I cut 3.5" strips of binding fabric - the ends were joined end-on rather than diagonal to hide the joins - and using the double fold method it was stitched to the front of the quilt, raw edges of the binding matching the raw edges of the quilt, again using the walking foot as a guide. Having a wide walking foot that is exactly 0.5" from the needle to the edge certainly makes life a lot simpler!! The folded edge was then turned over to the wrong side of the quilt and held in place with Clover Wonder Clips - these are really brilliant, and save me getting stabbed by lots of pins!! the the binding was hand stitched into place using a neutral coloured thread and ladder stitch... ...and here's the finished quilt - finally it's a sunny day to get some pictures! This is a very simple reversible baby quilt. Now it's ready to be wrapped and delivered to the new baby! Hope Harry's mum likes it - it's very different from the style of quilt that I made for Olive.
