Do you remember the table runner I made for my secret swapee? Well all was going swimmingly - the runner was parceled up, and off it went halfway around the world, to be delivered to New Zealand. However, a couple of weeks later, the parcel was returned to me, damaged, and "unable to deliver". Fortunately the runner inside the parcel had survived, so I quickly made another gift to put in with the runner, added some other bits and bobs and it has been re-packaged and sent on it's way again. I was so glad when the recipent, Michelle, said it finally arrived in one piece!.... .....anyway, this is the runner that I received from my partner Anne Glencer, from America - this very festive runner, with appliqued "ornaments" appliqued on it. I'm sure this will be put to good use during the festive season.

No, it's not snowing outside yet, but It's Snowing! by Debs Strain for Moda is the fabric range that I have used for this tablerunner. Do you remember that I completed the pieced border as last months FNSI? This pattern is called "Festive Season" and is designed by Annie Downes, whose website is "Hatched and Patched"..... .....well I had a free morning today (due to having a very poorly car) so what better way to spend it than sewing? I used a white Mettler quilting thread and quilted it using the "stitch-in-the-ditch" method..... .....I used a piece of cotton wadding for this runner, and spray basted the layers together with 505 spray before the I quilted it. I love these fun and funky fabrics, and even though they are not what you would call "traditional" Christmas colours, they look great..... .....and this stripey fabric is fantastic for the binding. I added one of my labels, and then hand stitched the binding into place. I chose some Christmas themed fabric from my stash for the backing, called "Winterscapes" for Benartex..... .....this runner is part of a Secret Santa swap that I am taking part in, and no, I'm not revealing who the lucky person is yet - all will be revealed nearer time! Now I need to get busy and finish the rest of my sewing as this swap needs a few little extras to be added before it gets posted off to the lucky swapee. Yesterday was Friday Night Sew-In and I had the perfect project to complete. I had already stitched the centre panel of this runner, and had picked a turquoise DMC embroidery thread to use for the stitchery. This embroidery thread co-ordinates perfectly with the fabrics that I was going to use for the border. I had already got a Charm Pack in my stash, and decided to use that. So last night I cut the Charm Squares into quarters. This fabric range is "It's Snowing!" by Debs Strain for Moda..... .....I've chosen some Christmas themed fabric from my stash for the backing, called "Winterscapes" for Benartex. Now I just need to get this runner quilted and get the binding on as it is part of a Secret Santa Swap that I am taking part in. These colours are really funky and modern, not all traditional and typical of Christmas - hope my swapee will like it! *Update: I have been asked about the stitchery pattern - it is called "Festive Season" and is designed by Annie Downes, whose website is "Hatched and Patched". After a really busy day at work today, just look what had arrived in the post when I got home! This lovely runner was sent to me as part of a swap that I took part in, and today it finally arrived all the way from America..... .....my swap partner had added in some extra goodies for me too - a book about hand applique, and some fabric and some yummy chocolate raisins..... .....this runner looks really great on my dining table. Thank you so much Barbara Bobbie Shotwell Zitelli - I love it! Now I'm looking forward to making things for the next swap which is a "Secret Santa". Do you remember the runner that I made for the "Sew SwapIt" FB group that I belong to? Well it was posted off to my swapee, Anne Glencer, and it went all the way to Virginia in America - it has arrived safely, and Anne says it's beautiful! Now I'm getting ready to make another gift for the next swap which is a "Secret Santa" and we can chose to make anything from the following list: a pillow, a Christmas stocking, a Christmas table runner, a pot holder set, an apron, a pair of mug rugs, a holiday wall hanging, a set of 4 Christmas tree ornaments, or a sewing machine cover. Oh and yes, I will share lots of piccies on my blog of the project that I decide to make! I have joined a group on Facebook called "Sew SwapIt" and items are made and swapped among the group members. The swap this month is a table runner, and could be either a Halloween or Autumn theme, and these are the fabrics I have decided to use - an Autumnal collection called Gobble Gobble by Sandy Gervais for Moda..... .....I received only a little bit of information about the person who I'm making this runner for - she had requested autumn colours - and she'd said that although she was just starting to get into "modern quilting", she was not totally embracing it yet, but was trying to broaden her horizons, so this fabric range is ideal for the project I had in mind. Traditional piecing, but with a modern layout and quilting design. I thought my "swapee" would like these autumnal fabrics, in a variety of colours - greens, rusts, oranges and browns. Pumpkins, leaves, flowers and spots. Funky and modern patterns but traditional colours. I decided to design my own pattern for the runner - a modern layout, but made with traditional piecing. So, I started off by cutting out lots of 2½" squares..... .....I joined the squares together to make a nine-patch block, pressing my seams as I went along - then I joined 5 of these nine-patch blocks together..... .....asymmetric crisp linen borders were added on each side of the runner..... .....the runner was finished with simple machine quilting, using a dark brown Mettler quilting thread (top tip - I always use Schmetz Topstitch needles size 90 for quilting). I used a Clover Hera marker to mark quilting lines 1" apart, then quilted in the middle of these lines by using the edge of my walking foot as a guide..... .....I have used matching prints from the same fabric range for both the backing and for the single-fold binding. And one of my labels as a final flourish? But of course..... .....and finally - here is the finished runner! This will be winging it's way across the sea to America - and no I'm NOT going to say who it is for yet, I don't want to spoil the surprise! Oh and I might just add a couple of extra "treats" for the lucky swappee! |
