What a wonderful week away I've had with my friends Helen and Linda, and 7 other quilters, in Yorkshire on a quilting course with Philippa Naylor. We stayed in a superb B and B, Highfield Farm, in Southburn, near Driffield (where we've stayed for the past couple of years too) - and we were all made extremely welcome as usual. Before I share some pictures of the quilted projects I made while I was away, I just had to show you a few pictures of where we were staying, and also some pictures of the delicious food that was provided by Highfield Farm as part of our course... ...my room, "Hutton", was very comfortable as you can see, and the view from my window was across open fields. It was so peaceful, and very relaxing. It was a shame I had to come home after just a week!... ...Highfield Farm is also the base for the Yorkshire Wold Cookery School - maybe I should have another holiday their to refine my cooking skills! The meals were all delicious, and we were lucky enough to have evening meals provided for us there as well as our breakfasts... ...lunches were provided by the staff at Highfield Farm too - we had a superb menu that ranged from pea and mint soup with blue cheese focaccia bread, parmesan crisps, beetroot crisps and vegetable crisps, to caramelised walnut and butter nut squash salad, prosciutto and melon salad, and Womersley vinegar potato salad. As you can see from the pictures, it really was yummy... ...we really were spoiled, and the puddings were absolutely delicious too - especially these Banoffee Pie puddings!! We were all very well looked after, and I shall look forward to going back there again next year - and maybe I can squeeze in a holiday there with Mr F too, as there are lots of places to explore in that part of Yorkshire.

It's time for my annual trip to Yorkshire with my friends Helen and Linda for our annual quilting holiday! We're staying at a fabulous B and B, Highfield Farm, and we'll have a week of quilting being taught by the fabulous Philippa Naylor! (Philippa has a new book that has just been published, "Applique Mastery). This is the third year running that I've been, so you'd think I'd know what to pack by now - but there's always one more reel of thread, and one more fat quarter that I just NEED to squeeze into my suitcase. And yes I have packed one or two items of clothing to wear too, and some shoes, and a bit more fabric! I'll take lots of pictures, of the B and B, and the beautiful countryside, and the quilting, and the food - (I forgot to mention the food is simply divine at Highfield Farm) - anyway, I'll tell you all about it when I get back next week.
What a fantastic week we had in Yorkshire - the food, the sewing, the company and OF COURSE Philippa Naylor! We stayed at Highfield Farm - an excellent B and B where we were very well looked after - the meals were superb, and it was so nice not to have to think about cooking meals for a whole week! I'm back from my travels, and still getting used to having to prepare my own breakfast, washing up the dishes and having to go to work instead of spending the day sewing! The course was "Drama and Detail" - the focus of this class is to study in detail both composition and fine workmanship techniques. These techniques include raw-edge, turned-edge, satin stitch and invisible machine appliqué. We learnt how to sew perfect satin stitch circles and mitered corners, how to make a variety of bias strips and the neatest rouleau loops you've ever seen. Philippa is a fantastic teacher, and as usual we all learnt lots and lots, from both Philippa and from each other. I'll share some pictures of all the lovely crafty things I made during my week away over the next few days - I decided to make several smaller projects this year, rather than a wall hanging or a quilt, and feel inspired to make lots more. It was lovely to see Caroline and Edith again who had travelled all the way from France, and it was lovely to meet new friends too - Katy, Ali, and Ruth. I can't wait to go again next year - after all, it's so nice to have something to look forward too!!
Well I'm off on my travels again - do you remember last year I went on the most wonderful trip to Yorkshire? I stayed at a superb B&B - Highfield Farm at Driffield - the food was wonderful, the service was excellent and the rooms were lovely. I was part of a group of quilters who were on a course with Philippa Naylor - she is simply the best quilt tutor I have ever been on a class with. This year we are going to be taught by her for 5 whole days!! We are doing a course called "Drama and Detail" - studies in composition, colour and contemporary machine appliqué. I'm just trying to squeeze everything I might "need" into my sewing box. And why oh why is my bag of fabrics bigger than my bag of clothes??!! Oh and Mr F is really happy about me going off on my hols - it means that at least for this week he can walk about barefoot without fear of treading on a needle or a pin!! Anyway I'll be back to tell you all about it next weekend. Until then, Au Revoir!!
Last Sunday morning I travelled up to Yorkshire along with my friend Helen, and a new friend Jan (hi Jan!!) to stay at Highfield Farm, in Southburn, near Beverley. We were staying in a B and B, as we were in Yorkshire to do a 4-day quilting course with Philippa Naylor. I just had to blog about our wonderul accommodation, as it really was superb!! We were all made extremely welcome, from the moment we arrived (offered a pot of tea as soon as we arrived, which was just what we needed), right up until the moment we left. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Each morning we had the most delicious breakfasts, (sorry - no piccies of those) and we had opted for an evening meal to be provided too - again, no piccies - I'm sooooo sorry! - but you can take my word for it the food was excellent!..... .....I stayed in the "Hutton" room, which was lovely and peaceful and beautifully decorated, with an en-suite shower room - and the towels were exactly my favourite colour too - how spooky is that! Hopefully we'll have another holiday there again next year, but also I might have to persuade Mr F that we NEED to go on hols to Yorkshire to explore more of this lovely area around Beverley as we didn't get a chance to do much sight-seeing on this trip.
Oh what a FABULOUS time I had last week on a quilting holiday with Philippa Naylor. My friend Helen had organised it, and when she first asked me if I was interested (last year at the NEC - do you remember Helen?) I really couldn't have imagined what an exciting time we'd have - we were quite a mixed bunch, some of the members of the group already knew each other, and we were joined by two very lively French ladies. Philippa is so talented, and such a generous person - we all learnt so much from this trip, not just quilting and piecing skills! Here is a piccie of our group when we spent an evening at Philippa's home, this was taken in her studio, and we're in front of one of her fabulous creations. I made some wonderful new friends, and would like to say a big thank you to everyone for a super time - Irene, Pat, Clive, Helen, Caroline, Tanya, Edith, Jan and Kate - and not forgetting Philippa too. Thank you so much Philippa for all your kindness and generosity and advice - you really were incredibly patient with us, and especially thanks to Helen for arranging this wonderful trip. Hope to go again next year!!!
